Italy
One of the most visited countries in the world and a wonderful place that in my humble opinion should be visited by all at least once in a lifetime, Italy has plenty to offer for all tastes and travel types.
Best time to visit
Spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October) are great times to visit, as the weather is milder and crowds smaller.
Currency and language
Italy's currency is the Euro (€) and Italian is the official language, though English is spoken in tourist areas by some locals.
Cultural highlight
The rich culture is defined by its art, music, history, cuisine and festivals. Some highlights include the Carnival in Venice, or Palio in Siena.
Local customs
Respect for tradition is important in Italy. Dress modestly when visiting churches, and embrace the leisurely pace of meals.
Italy holds a special place in my heart. It is a beautiful country that I have the privilege of calling home, and where I have spent countless time over the years. Yet every visit feels like I uncover yet a new treasure. One that I want to share and keep secret all at the same time. The charm that Italy offers is undeniable, regardless of whether you are wandering through the cobbled streets of Florence to marvel at the open air art gallery, or watching a sunset over the Amalfi Coast with a gelato in hand.
Each region offers so much in terms of history, culinary specialities, art, language and hospitality. Beyond its iconic cities like Rome, Milan, Florence and Venice, Italy's diverse landscapes are equally captivating. From mountain ranges and lakes, to crystalline waters that rival the Caribbean, the natural aspects are as awe-inspiring as its extensive history. Whether you are interested in art, history, food, or la dolce vita, Italy is truly more than a destination: it is an experience that will stay with you long after you've left.

Hints and tips
There is a reason why they talk about the dolce vita lifestyle in Italy. Slow down and take your time on holiday to enjoy life like the locals, and don't be overly quick to rush to the tourist spots. Don't rush the Italian experience, embrace it as part of the culture. You won't regret it.
Transport
Major cities such as Rome, Milan and Florence have efficient metro, tram or bus systems, and the extensive train network allows for efficient travel nationwide. Make sure to validate your ticket before boarding any buses and trains to avoid unnecessary fines. For more rural areas, it may be better to rent a car for off-the-beaten-track exploration.
What to pack
Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes are essential for the many cobblestone streets that are typical in Italy. Don't forget your sunglasses and sunscreen as Italy gets plenty of sun, even in the cooler months, and a reusable water bottle is great as many cities have free public water fountains.
Food and cuisine
Italian cuisine is renowned the world over, but each region has its own unique culinary identity that is worth experiencing. Why not be more adventurous than the expected pizza or pasta dish: try risotto, calzone, arancine, or bistecca. Also, do Italians a favour and avoid ordering a cappuccino after 11am. Be savvy when it comes to dining and look for restaurants with a mix of locals and visitors to find the most authentic food.
